Borrowing

All you need to know about library membership, borrowing and loans

What is the difference between inter-library loan and document supply?

Document supply is an umbrella term that covers a range of services provided by the Library designed to help you access the learning resources you need. Inter-library loan is one such service and is described in detail below. Click on the menu headings to find out about other document supply services, like More Books and our scanning service.

What is inter-library loan and how does it work?

Inter-library loan is a way for you to get access to books, book chapters and journal articles that aren't held by our library. Simply complete a request form and we'll try to source the item from another library. A small fee applies (see Fees and Quotas below).

Books supplied on inter-library loan must be collected from the Library and can normally be borrowed for three weeks, but may be subject to earlier recall or restricted use within the Library. Articles and chapters are normally emailed to you and are yours to keep. When an item is ready to collect we notify you by BGU email.

If you are interested in accessing a thesis please refer to the separate page about Theses and the EThOS service.

To submit an inter-library loan request:

Click here if you are a BGU student or staff member and wish to request an inter-library loan for personal use

You will be required to accept the terms of a copyright declaration as part of the submission process.

Members of BGU staff wishing to request copyright-fee paid inter-library loans to upload to reading lists should use the CLA Scan Request form in the E-Forms area of SharePoint.

Fees and Quotas

Because the cost of this service is heavily subsidised, we charge taught students £1 per (satisfied) request.  We also apply an annual quota (1 August to 31 July), as below.  Further requests, on top of the quota, are charged at £12 each.

1st year and foundation year students: 5 requests
2nd year students:  10 requests
3rd year / PGCE / Masters / EdD taught phase:  15 requests
PhD / EdD research phase:  40 (free) requests
Staff members: Unlimited (free, work-related) requests

If a fee is payable it is applied to your library account at the point we process the request. We notify you of this via BGU email. You can pay the charge the next time you visit the Library or you can pay it online (please select Library Charges). If charges remain unpaid for a month or more we reserve the right to deny use of inter-library services until such time as the outstanding amount is paid.
